There are 3 basic versions the 3900, 3980 and the 3980xpi. All 3 versions are the same except for the MSM module. The Mass Storage Module adds large internal disk drive storage usually 80 megs from the factory. The MSM board is added to the 3900 to make it a 3980, you also get a black case. The parallel port is added to the 3980 to make it the 3980xpi, along with the black case you get the xpi logo on it and the parallel connector on the back. The MSM board has the parallel port on it and all they do is add a ribbon cable and a parallel connector to the back of the unit, call it the xpi and raise the price a bunch. There is also a 2900 with half the pins programming capability.

The following is from the 3980xpi user manual.

3980xpi Programming System
The 3980xpi features all the benefits of the 3980 series universal device programmer with the additional ability to quickly and easily handle devices that require large data files, as well as other enhancements that make the programmer easier to use in production or engineering environments. Other than the parallel port I'm not sure what the other enhancements are.

3980 Programming System
In addition to the features of the 3900, the 3980 has an internal hard disk drive, the Mass Storage Module, that provides 80 MB of storage space for system software and device programming algorithms so you do not have to insert a Boot disk when you power up or switch disks during operation.

3900 Programming System
The 3900 has 88 universal pin drivers capable of supporting devices of all pin sizes. The optional PLCC base and MatchBooks provide support for over 3000 devices in PLCC packages. The optional PPI Base and adapters support a wide variety of packages, including SOIC, TSOP, QFP, and µBGA.

2900 Programming System
The 2900 has 44 universal (analog and digital) pin drivers. The standard DIP base supports DIP packages to 48 pins. The optional PPI Base and adapters extend support to devices in other package styles.

3980xpi and internal boards, I sold the unit after it failed and reverted back to a UniSite. I sold or swapped the bases for UniSite bases and kept all the matchbooks and PPI adapters.

Parallel and serial cable conneted

Terminal mode from Task Link, must have serial cable.

I use a USB 3 wire serial cable, works great.

Clear view of the back of my unit.

Here is the wy the parallel cable is connected.

SOIC with extra gold pad.

PLCC with extra gold pad, unit is brand new.

LCC with extra gold pad, unit is brand new.

PPI adapter with the 5 different modules.

I'm not sure about this unit, it came with some of my other 3980 modules.

The 2900 and 3900 series are identical except the 3900 has two pin driver boards and a different base relay board, everything else is the same.

3900 and 3980 differences

I believe the PLCC matchbooks are compatible with the UniSite & 2900 PLCC adapters and might be with the 2700.
